July 5 – International Day of Cooperatives

Why This Day Is Special?

The International Day of Cooperatives celebrates the unique way cooperatives help communities work together for shared success. It highlights how cooperation builds strong businesses, empowers people, and supports fair and inclusive development.

History Behind the Day

In 1995, the United Nations officially proclaimed the first Saturday of July as the International Day of Cooperatives. This marked the  100th anniversary of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), one of the oldest global organizations supporting cooperatives. The day brings attention to the values of mutual support, democracy, and equality in cooperative work.

Did You Know❓

  • There are more than 3 million cooperatives around the world, employing over 280 million people.
  • In India,  Amul is one of the most successful dairy cooperatives.
  • Cooperatives follow 7 core principles, including voluntary membership, democratic control, and concern for community.

How Can We Celebrate?

  1. Support a local co-op by buying their products or services.
  2.  Learn how cooperatives empower farmers, artisans, and small businesses.
  3.  Organize a group activity or classroom discussion about teamwork and fair trade.

Cooperatives remind us that great things happen when we work together. Let’s build a world where success is shared and no one is left behind.
