March 14 – International Day of Action for Rivers

Why This Day Is Special

This day commemorates the day Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa took over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief, in 1949.

History Behind the Day

Established during a 1997 meeting in Brazil, the day has been marked annually since 1998 to highlight rivers as lifelines and demand sustainable water management.

Did You Know?

• Rivers worldwide face 83% biodiversity loss since 1970 due to pollution and dams.
• March 14 is the 28th annual River Day in 2026.
• Communities campaign for free-flowing rivers and the legal rights of waterways.

How Can We Celebrate?

• Join a river clean-up, walk, or protest near your region.
• Share stories or art that honor rivers and the lives they support.
• Advocate for policies that protect freshwater ecosystems.

Rivers give us life—let’s give back by preserving their flow and dignity.
