Why This Day Is Special

The day encourages girls to become active global citizens and make a positive impact on the world. It emphasizes shared values and sisterhood across borders.

History Behind the Day

World Thinking Day marks the shared birthday of Lord Baden-Powell (founder of the Boy Scout movement) and his wife, Olave Baden-Powell (World Chief Guide). The idea for a special day of "thinking" about fellow Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world originated at the 4th World Conference in 1926. It was renamed World Thinking Day in 1999. Each year, a theme focuses on a specific global issue or aspect of guiding.

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) is the largest voluntary movement dedicated to girls and young women globally. Through guiding, girls develop leadership skills, self-confidence, and a sense of community service. The "Thinking Day Fund" supports WAGGGS initiatives and projects worldwide. Many activities on this day involve learning about different cultures and global challenges.
