National Startup Day celebrates the resilience, innovation, and drive of India’s startup ecosystem. Observed every January 16, it spotlights ambitious entrepreneurs turning ideas into impactful ventures across sectors. Founders, mentors, investors, and ecosystem partners come together—through pitchathons, workshops, mentorship sessions, and networking forums—to ignite new ventures and foster collaboration.

History Behind the Day

The day marks the anniversary of Startup India, an initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 16, 2016, designed to foster innovation and build a robust startup culture. In 2022, during Startup India Innovation Week, the Prime Minister officially designated January 16 as National Startup Day. In 2025, the ninth anniversary features “Udyamotsav 2025” and a week-long celebration of student entrepreneurship across 14 Indian cities.

  • As of January 15, 2025, more than 159,000 startups are officially recognized in India, making it the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world.
